Argentina Takes Copa America Opener Against Canada 2-0
Higuain and Messi Provide Goals in Group B Triumph
Argentina began their Copa America campaign with a 2-0 victory over Canada on June 20 in Orlando, Florida. Goals from Gonzalo Higuain and Lionel Messi secured the three points for the South American champions.
Canada acquitted themselves well against the tournament favorites, but Argentina's quality ultimately proved too much. Higuain opened the scoring in the 10th minute with a fine finish from outside the area, and Messi doubled the lead just before halftime with a trademark free-kick.
Canada missed a golden opportunity to equalize in the second half when Alphonso Davies saw his penalty saved by Sergio Romero. Argentina controlled the remainder of the game and could have added to their lead, but they were denied by a combination of good goalkeeping and some wayward finishing.
The victory gives Argentina a strong start to their Copa America campaign, while Canada will be disappointed to have not taken anything from the game. The two teams will meet again in the group stage on June 24.
In the day's other Group B game, Chile defeated Bolivia 3-0. Alexis Sanchez, Mauricio Isla, and Eduardo Vargas scored the goals for the reigning champions.
