Oxford Board of Health Enforces Curfew to Combat EEE

Curfew Recommended to Protect Residents

EEE Threat Prompts Outdoor Restrictions

Amidst the rising concern over Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) in Oxford, the Board of Health has unanimously approved a 6 pm curfew to safeguard the town's residents. This decision follows the first reported human case of EEE in the area this year, prompting the state to elevate the risk level to "high" for Oxford and neighboring towns.

The curfew restricts outdoor activities to protect residents from mosquito bites, the primary vector for EEE transmission. The virus, which can cause severe neurological damage and even death, is particularly active during the dusk and dawn hours when mosquitoes are most prevalent.

By implementing the curfew, the Board of Health aims to minimize the risk of exposure and prevent further cases of EEE. Residents are urged to adhere to the curfew and take additional precautions, such as using insect repellent, wearing long sleeves and pants, and avoiding outdoor activities during peak mosquito hours.

Understanding Eastern Equine Encephalitis

Symptoms and Risks

EEE is a rare but severe viral disease that can affect both humans and animals. Symptoms in humans can range from mild, flu-like symptoms to severe neurological problems, including fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, confusion, and seizures.

EEE is fatal in about one-third of cases, and those who survive may experience long-term neurological complications. The elderly and individuals with weakened immune systems are at higher risk of severe illness.

Transmission and Prevention

EEE is primarily transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito. Mosquitoes become infected by feeding on infected birds, which are the primary reservoir for the virus.

Preventing EEE involves minimizing mosquito bites. This includes using insect repellent, wearing protective clothing, and removing standing water where mosquitoes can breed.

Additional Precautions for Oxford Residents

In addition to the curfew, the Board of Health recommends that residents take the following precautions:

  • Use insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, or IR3535.
  • Wear long sleeves and pants when outdoors, especially during peak mosquito hours.
  • Avoid outdoor activities during dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active.
  • Eliminate standing water around your property, where mosquitoes can breed.
  • Report any dead birds to the local health department for testing.

By following these recommendations, Oxford residents can help reduce their risk of EEE and protect their health.
